Saturday May 11, 2013: Nine boys and 5 adult leaders met at El Corte de Madera Creek to work on map and compass skills. Three older boys started the event by teaching their younger peers how to read a map and use a compass using the EDGE method (and thereby earn teaching credit for the Life Scout rank). Once the adults were satisfied that the younger boys had learned the skills, we put it all in practice by taking a five mile hike through the wooded hills. At each trail junction, one of the 6 younger scouts was given a bearing. He had to use his compass, correct for true north vs magnetic north, and pick the proper trail. We completed the 5 mile course without any unplanned detours!
