For Chifung’s Eagle Scout project, he and several scouts designed, built, and installed a freestanding backpack rack for Norcal Crew’s boathouse at Chesapeake Rowing in Redwood City.
Before the project, athletes had no dedicated storage for their bags. They were left on the floor during practices, creating clutter and tripping hazards. He recruited and led a team of 9 volunteers, including scouts, family, and adult leaders, across a multi-week project spanning material sourcing, fabrication, and assembly. The final rack stands about 7 feet tall with 28 metal hooks on four horizontal beams, mounted on a trapezoid wooden frame with industrial casters so staff can move it around the boathouse as needed.
The rack primarily serves Norcal Crew’s U15 and U16 athletes, many of whom are middle schoolers new to rowing, as well as participants in the club’s Learn to Row camps. It gives every athlete a designated hook, frees up floor space permanently, and makes transitions between land and water activities safer and more organized.
Total project hours across the team: 339.
